Focus on crocus, their life is so short.
They must be cherished whilst we can.
Since winter began they have begun
To thrust their way upwards,
To make an open cup display,
Lasting unfortunately for too short a day.
A real spring beauty, crocus are diminutive but distinctive.
Like a tiny jewel laid on the ground,
Awaiting the chance to be found and admired.
For it transpired the effort they make
Will take a gardener forwards into spring.
Easy to naturalise in lawns or borders,
The flower sits neatly among lush silver or emerald foliage,
Set well at a border’s edge especially in an area sunny,
They pledge to provide food for early foraging bees.
Mixed in with dainty snowdrops or cyclamen, crocus are particularly pretty,
Their lilac, purple and sunny yellow contrasting well with bright white.
Beneficially they will self sow and spread,
Adding much to the February and March flower bed.
As a crop they pop up to silently declare
Spring is on its way. Let’s share a day or two or three,
If sunny, many to pave the way
For the rich abundancy of spring’s new life.
How glorious this will be, a truly happy event!
Lord Creator Father, thank You that the season is advancing into spring, and crocus identify this. They are a tiny jewel but really precious. We look forwards to the forth coming explosion of colour! Amen.
